Key facts
- iDEAL pays straight from your bank account and needs no separate registration if you have online banking at a participating bank.

- iDEAL is expected to disappear from checkouts around the end of 2027, depending on a market consultation.

- ING, bunq and ABN AMRO let you open an account before you have a BSN, if you add it within 90 days.
What to do
Tick each step when it's done; we remember it in this browser.
Choose a bank that fits your situation. If you do not have a BSN yet, check which banks allow you to add it later.
iDEAL payments and payment requests run through your bank's app, so install it and set up the login first.
Choose 'iDEAL | Wero' at checkout, pick your bank and approve the payment in your app.
To split a dinner, send a Tikkie or a payment request from your banking app. The other person pays with a link.
Genuine Tikkie links start with https://tikkie.me/pay/. Do not click links that look different, and never send '1 cent to verify' to a buyer on Marktplaats.
Why a Dutch account helps
Many Dutch payments assume you have a Dutch bank account. Webshops, municipal taxes and fines often use iDEAL, and friends split costs with payment requests.
Some health insurers and phone companies may ask for a Dutch IBAN.
From iDEAL to Wero
Wero is a payment system from the European Payments Initiative, a group of European banks and payment companies that also owns iDEAL. It already works in Belgium, Germany and France.
In the Netherlands, iDEAL shows as 'iDEAL | Wero' from early 2026. Payments are moved to the Wero system in the background in stages. For you, paying works the same way: you choose your bank and approve in your app. Later Wero adds features such as purchase protection, with phased introduction through 2028.
Sending money to friends with Wero is being rolled out bank by bank. Check your own bank app to see if it is available.
Tikkie and payment requests
Tikkie is an ABN AMRO app, but anyone with a Dutch bank account can use it. You need a Dutch, Belgian, German or other supported European phone number. A request stays valid for two weeks.
Most Dutch banks also offer payment requests in their own app. The person paying does not need to be with the same bank.
Avoiding payment scams
Scammers copy the look of Tikkie and iDEAL. A common trick on Marktplaats is asking a seller to transfer 1 cent through a fake link that steals your bank login. iDEAL also warns about phishing emails using its name.
Mistakes to avoid
- Clicking a payment link without checking the web address.
- Typing your IBAN wrong when signing up for Tikkie; ABN AMRO does not check it.
- Assuming a foreign card works everywhere; many Dutch shops and services prefer debit or iDEAL.
- Forgetting to add your BSN to the bank within the deadline after opening an account without one.
